If the installed firmware is older than the available one, an update is required. winIDEA will warn you, if your firmware is outdated. Other issues are possible as well, e.g. cannot initialize hardware.
1. (optional) In case you're using an older winIDEA version, please do this procedure in the latest verified build as it has the most recent available firmware.
2. Update Firmware via Hardware / Debugger Hardware / Hardware Type / System Configuration.
